Well, hello, beautiful! (Photo: Wikimedia Commons)

In college, I was famous for my jello shot recipe: the flavor was perfect, with the jello coming front and center, belying how much alcohol was hidden in them. This is the way we typically understand this fun way of taking your evening sauce: a chaser and a shot rolled together into one. But with the help of this guide, you can expand from that territory into something more like a jello shot mixed drink. Here, we'll teach you the perfect technique for an outstanding, foolproof jello shot each time.

It's All About the Ratio

Start by chilling your water and alcohol. Put a cup of ice water for every package of jello you're going to use into your fridge. You'll end up using less than a cup per package, but it's always good to have more just in case you mess up or something.

Additionally, put your handle of booze in the freezer. You're not going to use the whole handle, but it is never a bad idea to have booze in your freezer (unless you plan on making a cocktail with it).

Next, grab six ounces of Jello mix (one large box or two small boxes) per batch. If I'm using vodka, I'll typically go with lemon as my flavor. On the stove, boil two cups of water.

Now for the second-most fun part: combine the boiling water, 3/4 cup of cold water, and 1 1/4 cup of alcohol with the Jello mix. Stir it up and put it in paper cups in the fridge.

It's that easy.

Jello Shot Cocktails

So maybe you're looking to do something a little more extravagant with your jello shots. Here are some amazing combinations of Jello flavors and alcohols that'll make your friends glad to know you. All you have to do is make sure to keep the ratios above in tact and you'll get a perfect jello shot each time:

Blue Raspberry Jello + Everclear

Blue Raspberry Jello + Peach Schnapps + Triple Sec

Unflavored Gelatin + 3 parts Cola + 1 Part Bacardi 151

Lime Jello + Coconut Rum

Lime Jello + Tequila + Salt (on top afterwards)

Raspberry Jello + Prosecco + Fresh Raspberries

The list goes on and on. Get inventive. Enjoy!
