Making homemade ice cream without an ice cream maker is a labor of love. Your end product may not be as polished as its electric or hand-churned brothers, which are admittedly smoother and creamier, but cooks have been doing it this way for centuries, and there's no reason you shouldn't be able to do so as well.

The trick is to choose a custard-based ice cream recipe for this, as that's the most foolproof.

1. Prepare your ice cream.

Follow the ice cream recipe you're using by wrote, and then put it in a ziploc bag. Add it to an ice bath.

2. Get it ready for the freezer.

When it's as cold as you need it to be, pour it into a baking dish.

3. Round 1 begins in 45 minutes.

After forty-five minutes, open the door. If it's starting to freeze along the sides, stir it vigorously. Break those ice crystals up!

Return it to the freezer.

4. Round 2, 3, 4, etc. is in every 30 minutes.

Repeat the process every thirty minutes. As it starts to get colder, you can use a hand-mixer. But using it before it gets thick will produce weird results. A spatula works just fine, too.

5. Three hours later...

It's ready. Take it out and enjoy it!
