New Samuel Adams Octoberfest Milkshake at Red Robin: Cheers or Jeers?
Our stomachs are churning like an ice-cream maker.
So it's come to this: the patriots at Samuel Adams are working with the generic Americans at Red Robin to develop a caramel-covered, whipped-cream topped Octoberfest Milkshake that's filled with a combination of beer and ice cream.
If your stomach's churning, that's just because the marketing is so good.
Combining beer and ice cream isn't exactly novel. Some of our favorite ice cream places ever, like the Bent Spoon in New Jersey, have been combining stout and dairy and making really amazing things out of it. Hell, even if you've never had a beer ice cream before, you can't deny the staying power of the combination of beer and cheese to dip your pretzels and french fries in.

And the people at Red Robin know this.
That's why they think that their product is enough to have you come in and try it, even just for the sheer novelty. Think of this as their version of the KFC Double Down, or the Burger King Bacon Sundae. Family restaurants have yet to tread into the tenuous marketplace of the adventurously disgusting food item, so props to Red Robin for getting there before Applebees could do something truly heinous.
The Samuel Adams Octoberfest Milkshake still doesn't have a price attached to it, but you'll be happy to know that it expertly (or hamfistedly) blends Samuel Adams Octoberfest draft (which, if you must drink it, isn't all that bad), vanilla ice cream, and caramel. The people at Sam Adams boast that it "pairs well with the chain's warm pretzel bites and Pub Crawl Tavern Burger."
And for those of you keeping score at home, that burger is made with a beer cheese spread, beer mustard-onions, and bacon.
If you're a celiac, or just someone with common decency, stay away. If not, enjoy your Octoberfest, I guess.
