PepsiCo has decided to combine three of the iconic flavors their tasteologists (unofficial term) have access to. Pepsi (duh, its PepsiCo), Chicken (KFC) and Chips (Frito-Lay). Pepsi Chicken chips are only available in China, unfortunately, and are aimed at a flavor profile that is actually quite common in the Communist country. Ad Age highlights the popularity of a dish called 'cola chicken' which uses a cola-and-soy-sauce marinade that caramelizes on crispy chicken wings for a (probably delicious) sweet/salty flavor profile.

Pepsi chicken chips brand name in Chinese involves a double meaning. Putting the names together means "Anything can be happy" as well as "Pepsi can become Lay's." The overall strategy, according to Ad Age, is to convince Chinese consumers to focus on the little things in life that make them happy. The message carries a lot of weight in a culture that is obsessed with material wealth and upward mobility.

Pepsi chicken chips have been available since August and the reviews are mixed.

There are no plans to bring Pepsi chicken chips to the U.S., which is a damn shame. I think I speak for most American chip consumers when I say we're getting a little tired of BBQ already.

Hopefully when China conquers America in the next century they bring their Pepsi chicken chips with them.
